During the past two decades, the consumption of trans fatty acids (TFA) has been identified as an important modifiable risk factor for coronary heart disease and has been linked to the aggravation of visceral adiposity and insulin resistance in predisposed individuals. Multifaceted political and legislative actions have therefore been undertaken to restrict the use of TFA in food formulations in most Western countries.
