Rhodium(II)-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Diazo Compounds

The convergent synthesis of alkenes occupies a central position as a strategic reaction in organic synthesis (Scheme 1). The Wittig reaction and its many variants are often used as key transformations in retrosynthetic analysis. In recent years, olefin metathesis has become a dominant synthetic approach for the convergent synthesis of alkenes. Here we describe an alternative convergent method for the synthesis of unsymmetrical alkenes by a carbenoid-induced cross-coupling of diazo compounds.
