Bonding Changes in Plutonium(III) and Americium(III) Borates

Interest in trivalent actinide (e.g. Pu~(III), Am~(III), and Cm~(III)) borates stems from their potential formation in the geological repository for nuclear defense waste known as the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico, USA. A similar repository is being considered in Germany. In this salt deposit the concentration of borate species in intergranular brines can be as high as 166 ppm.
