Gold nanoclusters (GNCs) have attracted wide attention owing to their outstanding surface and physical properties (for example, near-infrared photoluminescence, optical chirality, and ferromagnetism ), which has led to a wide range of applications, such as for single-molecule photonics, sensing, and biological labeling. In contrast to organic dyes and quantum dots, GNCs do not contain chemical functions and toxic heavy metals. Their near-infrared range of emission avoids interference from many biological moieties, making GNCs ideal for biological assays and cell imaging so that they may become a powerful alternative to usual fluorescence labels.
