Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Si-MPs) have emerged as appealing hosts for the exploitation of novel nanocarriers featuring "on demand" drug delivery. To date, a variety of stimuli-responsive "pore blockers", such as organic molecules (cyclodextrin, dendrimer), metal (gold) nanoparticles, and supramolecular assemblies (rotaxanes, polyrot-axanes), have been introduced on the surfaces of Si-MPs to control the release of guest molecules in response to external stimuli.
