The incorporation of oxygen into organic substrates using oxidation or hydration transformations is commonly performed using transition-metal-based catalysts that are often expensive, difficult to remove, toxic, and are frequently obtained from limited natural resources. As such, the search for a catalyst that combines the toxicological benefits of a metal-free synthesis with the convenience of heterogeneous workup, whilst retaining high activity, is a continuing effort of critical importance.] Herein, we report the use of graphene oxide (GO), a readily available and inexpensive material, as a mild and efficient carbon catalyst for the generation of aldehydes or ketones from various alcohols, alkenes, and alkynes, a process we will refer to as "carbocatalysis".
