Post-translational modification (PTM), the alteration of a protein after its biosynthesis, often after it has been folded, takes place typically through the alteration of the functional groups in residue side chains. However, PTM is unlike transcription and translation; since PTM is not a "templated" process, it is often unpredictable and can give rise to complex mixtures of PTM protein, and the different components in those mixtures often have different properties.
