Jay Kazuo Kochi(1927-2008)

Jay Kazuo Kochi,an important figure in the fields of organometallics and physical organic chemistry,died on August 9,2008,following a brief battle with lung cancer,at the age of 81.Kochi was born in Los Angeles on May 17,1927.At a young age of 15,he was interned to a war relocation camp in Arizona in the wake of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.He graduated from high school while living in the Camp.After release from the camp,he went on to earn a BSc from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1949 and a doctorate from Iowa State University in 1952 under the supervision of George S.Hammond.Kochi was also an instructor at Harvard University(1952-1955)and a NIH special fellow at Cambridge University(1955-1956).
