Convenient Access to Trifluoromethanol

With the exception of cyclo-C4F7OH,alcohols possessing a fluorine atom on the a-carbon atom are unstable and undergo facile HF elimination.Therefore,it is not surprising that the most simple perfluorinated alcohol,trifluoromethanol(CF3OH),was synthesized by Seppelt only in 1977.His synthesis of CF3OH involved the reaction of a positively and a negatively polarized chlorine ligand at-120 deg C[Eq.(1)].
