The provision of economical telecommunications service requires effective maintenance management of a huge infrastructure of telecommunications equipment. A major maintenance concern is corrosion of the many metal components of telecommunications equipment. This paper examines the corrosion that affects the electrical and electronic components of telecommunications systems; for example, corrosion of conventional telephone switching equipment, such as the mechanical contacts of crossbar switches, electrolytic corrosion of telephone jacks, and sulfurization corrosion of Ag line patterns on semiconductor substrates. In addition, we examine the problem of corrosion in closed packages of outdoor equipment caused by accumulations of seasalt particles, dust, and humidity.
