摘要

The internet and the personal computer (PC) are becoming standard global communication media. The first computer, ENIAC, was created in 1945 but it was in the 1980s that the PC spread rapidly in Japan. PC training was integrated in experimental lessons for students in science and engineering faculties of universities. In 1990, the WWW (world-wide web) system was developed by CERN in Switzerland and, stimulated by the subsequent improvements in web browsers, user range expanded from scientists and engineers to graphic artists after the mid-1990s. Now the trend is to expand the range of internet users to primary school pupils, The Ministry of Education proposed a plan to connect all schools by internet before the end of 2001 (1,2). In this review, characteristic features of the internet are summarized and examples of how to make use of the internet for corrosion study is demonstrated.
