Contemporary French maritime hospital capabilities

During the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF) Exercise CORSICAN LION in October 2015, the authors spent ten days on board a French ship with a Role 2-3 (modular) hospital: SL-S in his role as Defence Medical Liaison Officer (France) and RH as the former Medical Role 2 Afloat SME. The exercise afforded the opportunity to build goodwill, trust, networks, and to discuss working practices with consideration of future engagement between the Defence Medical Services of France and the United Kingdom (UK). This article summarises the development of this class of ships and some of the facilities found on board, particularly where relevant to the use of their hospitals. 1-4
