James Lind - the father of maritimemedicine

James Lind can arguably be considered the father ofmaritime medicine. Born into a Scottish merchant family in1716, his medical career began with an apprenticeship to anEdinburgh surgeon (1). In 1738 he joined the Royal Navy,serving with ships in the Mediterranean, the west coastof Africa and the West Indies. After a decade at sea, hereturned to Edinburgh to complete his Medical Doctorate(specialising in venereal disease) and established himselfin private practice.
