Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Alexander 'Alex' James Shearman, Royal Navy, died at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines Lympstone on 3 February 2014. He was born on 10 January 1978 in Dartford, Kent, but spent most of his life in the West Country. He was educated at Plymouth College, and then moved on to Birmingham University. He joined the Royal Navy in 2000, whilst a medical student at Birmingham University, and qualified in medicine in 2002. He completed House Officer Posts at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth and Sutton Coldfield Hospital. Following New Entry Medical Officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, he spent the first six months of his General Duties time working in the Accident and Emergency Department of Derriford Hospital. He then deployed on HMS GLOUCESTER on Atlantic Patrol Task (South); RFA ARGUS; and Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, where he developed an interest in Aviation Medicine. His final General Duties appointment was a two-week attachment on RFA FORT GEORGE.
