STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE WILDLIFE (PROTECTION) ACT 1972

No law can be effectively implemented if it is not widely circulated, or even understood by the enforcement agencies that are empowered to enact the specific law. This is the case with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, a proficient piece of legislation that has been amended over the years to address changing circumstances, it is the implementation of the Act that is lacking. This paper is a discussion of specific methods and strategies to improve the use and effectiveness of the Act. Since the author'sexpertise largely covers exposing and prosecuting the illegal trade in wildlife products, this paper undoubtedly shows a bias towards this subject. Poor management of Protected Areas, encroachment, and non-trade related poaching, are no less an evil.
