The Global Ranavirus Consortium and Third International Symposium on Ranaviruses

Ranaviruses (family Iridoviridae) are emerging pathogens in fish, amphibians, and reptiles on a global scale. They have been identified as the causative agent of numerous morbidity and mortality events in captive and wild animals. In amphibians, ranavirus epizootics are notifiable to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus, a ranavirus described from cultured and wild Australian fishes, is also reportable to the OIE. Ranavirus infections in reptiles are not currently notifiable to the OIE. Considering that the same ranavirus species can be transmitted among fish, amphibians, and reptiles, they represent a serious threat to a wide range of cultivated and wild ectothermic vertebrate species.
