Clinical commentary in response to: clinimetric evaluation of measurement tools used in hand therapy to assess activity and participation.

Hand therapists have historically assessed patients' therapeutic progress with goniometers, dynamometers, and volumeters. Currently there is a growing recognition that these objective measures do not tell the whole story. The gold standard of evidence-based practice is creating a growing push for higher quality evidence, which goes beyond simple objective measurements and reflects an individual's ability to participate in life. In light of this trend, Schoneveld, Wittink, and Takken recognize a need for a source of information on the content and clinimetric properties of activity and participation assessments used in hand therapy.
