As a practising community-based hospice nurse and a graduate nursing student in a Master's programme for teaching nursing this paper by Henderson et aL (2007) on what constitutes caring behaviours by nursing was very informative and timely to my practice in both settings. The aim of their study was to explore what constitutes nurse-patient interactions that demonstrate caring. The authors stated that patients felt 'cared for' when nurses responded to specific requests, were readily available to accommodate their work to patients' requests, or communicated why these requests could not be immediately addressed. Nurses acting on behalf of their patients demonstrate respect through these caring practices which empower patients to maintain their integrity while in situations of illness and hospitalization
