Nutrient digestibility in dogs fed fiber-containing diets.

Eight mature dogs surgically fitted with ileal T-cannulae were fed fibre-containing diets to evaluate nutrient disappearance at the terminal ileum and through the digestive tract. Treatments were: control diet with maize; 7.5% beet pulp; 7.5% cellulose; and 7.5% soya fibre. Total tract total dietary fibre disappearance was highest for dogs consuming the soya fibre diet and lowest for dogs consuming the cellulose diet (P<0.05). Ileal and total tract NDF disappearance was lower (P<0.05) for cellulosethan for the other treatments. Dogs fed the cellulose diet had greater intake (P=0.0001), ileal flow (P=0.0001) and faecal (P=0.0001) flow of crude fibre than the dogs fed other fibre diets. Ileal N disappearance was similar for all treatments. However,total tract N disappearance was lower (P<0.05) for beet pulp and soya fibre. The data indicate that fibre source did not have a significant impact on nutrient digestion in the small intestine but the more fermentable fibres (beet pulp and soya fibre) decreased total tract N digestion. Method of fibre analysis greatly affects estimates of fibre intake and digestion. Based on these results total dietary fibre provides the most accurate measurement of fibre.
