The road to Gambia

On October 25, 2011, Laura Heaps and I set off on what was to be a 5,000-mile journey, travelling through seven countries to reach an isolated clinic providing essential veterinary care to working animals. The Gambia Horse & Donkey Trust (GHDT) is a charity that relies on donations and volunteers in order to continue its important work. The clinic was in desperate need of a new vehicle to run mobile veterinary clinics in the surrounding villages, so rather than taking the usual route via air, Pat andLaura decided to drive the much-needed 4x4 all the way down to The Gambia. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of several companies (in particular Vetericyn) and many kind donations, a superb Mazda twin cab pick-up was prepared for the trip, and filled with veterinary supplies. And by some miracle (with neither of us having much mechanical knowledge), we made it!
