Overview of challenges and opportunities in drug delivery and pharmaceutics

Industrial transformations are not new. Clayton Ghristensen book 'The Innovator's Dilemma' [1] aptly illustrates this point by describing many case studies where industrial giants that dominated the industry were unable to adapt to disruptive innovations and, as a result, no longer exist. All had similar patterns of events; namely, smaller companies developed an innovation that was simpler, cheaper and met a need at the low margin end of market, the large companies stopped competing in the low margin end to focus on the higher profit part of the market, the small innovators' products got better and then moved into slightly higher value markets, the larger established companies could not change or compete in that market so they focused on the even higher value part of the market and so on, until the established companies could not compete even in the highest-end products.
