EVERY YEAR THERE ARE AROUND 35,000 NEW CASES OF COLORECTAL CARCINOMA (CRC) diagnosed in the UK. Bowel cancer was responsible for more than 16,000 deaths in the UK in 2004, making it the second largest cause of cancer death.Although the overall five-year survival rate has improved, it remains below 50 per cent. The stage at which bowel cancer is diagnosed is the most important determinant of outcome.
