The soft tissue anatomy of the calf consists of muscles, arteries, and veins. This article correlates examples of various imaging methods with drawn illustrations to demonstrate the anatomy and various pathologic conditions that may cause acute calf enlargement, which can conveniently be classified into 5 major groups (traumatic, vascular, inflammatory/infectious, compartment syndromes, and other conditions). Different imaging modalities (ultrasound, Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, and interven-tional diagnostic techniques) are employed depending on the initial clinical suspicion and their sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of the expected disease.
