Conflict puts pressure on cancer-care resources in Lebanon

While the acute health effects of the war continue, some commentators warn of its long-term effects. Of particular concern is the oil spill caused by the Israeli bombing of the Jiyyeh power station in mid July. The slick has now reached Syria, spreading more than 150 km along the coastline of Lebanon's Mediterranean shore. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the scale of the spillage is already comparable with the damage caused by the Erika tanker on Dec 12, 1999, when it broke in two off the coast of France, spilling an estimated 13 000 tonnes of oil into the Atlantic Ocean.
