Francis Ferns looks at the history, development and philosophy of the use of rock in Japanese gardening I lost interest in Japanese garden design, as a model for rock gardeners, many years ago, having decided that it was basically willow pattern china plate style, with traditional pagoda, hump-backed bridge and willows weeping into much water, with blue birds cavorting in a cloudless sky. In spite of my loss of interest and consequent adoption of Gertrude Jekyll's thought on wall and water gardens,and Symons-Jeune's natural rock gardening technique, the origins and style of the Japanese gardens still intrigued and puzzled me.
