THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN STANDARD for bridge design has just been published providing nationally acceptable guidelines for road, rail, pedestrian and bicycle path bridges. AS 5100--2004 Bridge Design, replaces the Australian Bridge Code (HB 77) which was a handbook jointly published by AUSTROADS, the body that represents Australian and New Zealand road authorities, the Australasian Railway Association Inc, and Standards Australia. The main objectives of the new Standard are to provide nationally acceptable requirements for: the design of road, rail, pedestrian and bicycle-path bridges/the specific application of concrete, steel and composite steel/concrete construction/which embody principles that may be applied to other materials in association with/relevant Standards to ensure the nominated 100-year design life 6 the assessment of the load capacity of existing bridges. The first Code to provide rules for road bridge design Australia-wide was published in 1948 by the National Association of Australian State Road Authorities, the forerunner of AUSTROADS, making it one of the longest standing examples of co-operation between States in the roads area.
