New Australian Standard for Risk Management

AS/NZS 4360 was first published in 1995 and revised with minor changes in 1999, so when the latest review commenced in 2002 there was a wealth of experience to draw on. The consultation process showed that overall the Standard worked well but that clarification was needed in some areas. Some changes in emphasis were also needed as a result of developments in risk management since 1999; particularly reinforcing the upside of risk and strengthening links between risk management and strategic planning. Perhaps the most significant problem identified in AS/NZS 4360 was that the informative appendices were sometimes being applied inappropriately as if they were "the Standard" rather than being customised to the context. The solution the Committee reached was to write a briefer simpler Standard without examples, accompanied by a handbook where each section of the Standard is expanded and explained with examples from different types of risk.
