A globally accepted Standard for Risk Management

When developing Standards for use within Australia and New Zealand the responsible Technical Committee examines what international best practice is available to adapt and incorporate into the local document. This process has always been at the forefront of the Committee that developed the original AS/NZS 4360 Standard on Risk Management in 1995, followed by the revised 1999 version and now the 2004 edition of the Standard. A consequence of this process is that the final document, whilst being tailored to meet local Australian and New Zealand needs, satisfies many of the needs of overseas organisations. The Risk Management Standard, AS/NZS 4360, has been especially successful in gaming a wide following outside the Australasian region. The original 1995 edition was in fact the world's first risk management Standard and attracted a lot of attention in the United Kingdom as it coincided with moves to formalise corporate governance and the recognised need for a sound risk management process to support it. The reception elsewhere was not as high given a significant opposition to management Standards in both the USA and Europe.
