Creating an ISO 'commercial co-op'

At the ISO General Assembly held in Buenos Aires, Argentina last month, Standards Australia's Chief Executive, Mr Ross Wraight, made his last formal presentation as ISO Vice President Technical. In a valedictory concluding his four-year term of office, Mr Wraight put forward his ideas on ISO's past, present and future: its achievements and its challenges, including the specific challenge for ISO to maintain and enhance its global relevance in an increasingly globalised world. Following are excerpts from his speech to the 26th ISO General Assembly. ISO's first achievement is not only to have survived but to have thrived. We have been around for 54 years. That in itself is an achievement for any international organisation. Better still, rather than display tendencies to fragment, which is common in so many member-based organisations, we have gone from strength to strength.
