Since 1996, a performance-based approach has been taken to the design of a large proportion of major projects throughout Australia. This has created a demand for smoke door assemblies and combined fire-and-smoke door assemblies as part of alternative solutions to allow fire safety levels to be maintained or enhanced in a cost-effective manner. A challenging factor is the fact that different combinations of seals and door assemblies vary considerably in performance. There is a clear need for designers to be able to specify smoke door assemblies that have a known level of performance. There is also a clear need for manufacturers and installers to provide suitable door systems with appropriate supporting documentation to the satisfaction of the certifying organisation and designers.
