Peritoneal dialysis use within the context of the population and healthcare systems of Europe - differences, trends and future challenges

Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD) are complementary therapies in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Despite survival benefit, PD remains an underused therapy with variable utilisation and a common descriptive framework for this variation is not established. We reviewed the renal literature, general population and healthcare data to examine factors leading to variable PD use in Europe and possible changes in the future.
