摘要

Imagine the world as an incomprehensible place. A place where everyone is talking, but you can't understand them. A world where every day communication is based on the printed word, only you can't read those words. This is also a world that you haveto feed your family and support yourself in. This is the situation off-shore workers and farm labourers find themselves in every season. Every year thousands of Spanish speaking Mexican offshore labourers spend between six weeks and nine months in Canadaworking on tobacco farms, orchards or nurseries. They usually have little or no access to services in their own language, and must rely on others to assist them in such simple day-today tasks as banking or visiting the doctor.
