Tobacco Forum: The Nature Of The Business

For the past six years, I have acted as the freelance editor of the Canadian Tobacco Grower, but my role in that capacity has now ended. When I was first approached, all those years ago, I was flattered by the offer but more than a little apprehensiveas the shoes of retiring editor Dave MacLaren were ones I knew I could never really fill and certainly not on a part-time basis. My credentials were good but limited. I'd worked in tobacco harvest since age 12 when I wanted a transistor radio (worth about 30 dollar back then) and my dad insisted I work to earn the money to buy it. Dad, a bank manager, was a strong believer in kids knowing the value of a dollar. I swore back then I'd never marry a banker (we had to move every three years or so) or a tobacco farmer (too damn much work and stress). Fate stepped in, however, and I eventually found myself married into the industry.
