Taylor introduces last-over tobacco harvester

The problems associated with growing a large crop of flue-cured tobacco may be considerably lessened with some new innovations in tobacco combine technology. Taylor Manufacturing Inc. of Elizabethtown, NC, proclaimed its confidence in the US flue market, and introduced their last-over harvester at the Mid-Atlantic Farm Show in November. Regardless of controversy, they believe tobacco has a good future in the US, and markets will be even stronger in 1996, says president Ron Taylor. To develop the newharvester, Taylor Manufacturing invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in research, and two years developing the prototype. Following extensive field tests, the prototype was sold last summer to a large family farm in Spring Hope, NC, where it primedover 600 acres of tobacco. The harvester replaced 75 laborers, "and at that rate, it will pay for itself in a very short time," Mr. Taylor said.
