Are you sitting comfortably to read this editorial? Watch out then, because sitting for more than 2 consecutive hours may be bad for your health. Sitting is obviously a sedentary behavior and, as such, too much of it is potentially associated with all the sedentarity-related pathologies-you name them. Three articles appearing in this month's issue of Preventive Medicine address different but complementary aspects of the relation of sitting time to health (Chau et al., 2010; De Cocker et al., 2010; Oliver et al., 2010). First, De Cocker et al. (2010) report that young women who increase their sitting time as they age tend to put on more weight. The impact of sitting on weight change appeared to be immediate since current sitting habits did not predict future changes in weight. These results are in line with previous evidence relating sitting time to overweight and obesity published in PM (Tudor-Locke et al., 2009) and elsewhere (Hu et al., 2003).
