HUNDREDS of U.S. farmers have visited Brazil in the past few years. Some have bought land and equipment and have become Brazilian farmers. Others have put money in U.S.-managed investment groups that own and manage Brazilian farmland. For example, for 25,000 dollar an investor can own a piece of a 13,000-acre corn, cotton and soybean farm that promises a higher return than Corn Belt land. While foreign investment in Brazil can pay off, it is complicated by high taxes, changing regulations and a suffocating bureaucracy. There's also potentially-high inflation and monetary exchange rate risk.
