THE "mad cow threat" being ranted about by some in the media and Congress is basically a nonissue. Sure, there is bovine spon-giform encephalopathy in the United States, and, yes, it's a disease to be treated with respect. But as far as we know, no one anyplace and at any time has ever died from eating BSE-infected American beef.
