RISING health-care costs have farmers seeking ways to better manage those costs, both for themselves and for their employees. Health savings accounts, or HSAs, Congress created in the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 may help. Individuals can use HSAs to save money to cover future medical expenses. "The idea is to combine an HSA with a high-deductible health-insurance policy," says C. Kent Vandervort, Smith-Feike-Minton Inc., an independent insurance agency in Wilmington, Ohio. "You'd pay routine medical expenses out of the HSA. You'd use the high-deductible insurance for the big expenses. Shifting to a high-deductible policy should trim premium cost of the policy."
