Synthetic and structural studies based on the reaction of the Cu(II) complex of sen (3,7-diaza-5-(4'-amino-2-azabutyl)-5-methylnonane-1,9-diamine) with formaldehyde and nitroethane under base catalysis have shown that both syn and anti isomers of pendent-arm macrocycles of the "ryongamine" type can be readily obtained. The Cu(II) complexes of sen and one of its homologues also appear to undergo reactions with methanol which result in the formation of aminal derivatives where orientation of uncoordinated ligand arms is restricted by the aminal ring.
