Examples of mononuclear (Ni(II)), dinuclear (Ni(II), Co(III)) and trinuclear (Ni(II)) complexes of the ligand 1,4-di-2'-pyridyl-aminophthalazine (pap) are reported. In the dinuclear complexes two metal ions are bridged by phthalazine (N-N) groups and two water molecules (Ni(II)), and two hydroxide ions (Co(III)). A novel Ni-3(mu(3)-OH)(2) central core exists in the trinuclear example, with additional phthalazine (N-N) bridges linking the Ni(II) centers. The polynuclear nickel complexes exhibit antiferromagnetic exchange through combinations of diazine (N-N) and water and hydroxide bridges (J(Ni-2) = -4.9, -5.25 cm(-1); J(Ni-3) = -15.7 cm(-1)).
