Reactions of 2,2'-di(hydroxymethyl)biphenyl with trimethyl-, triethyl- and tri-iso-butylaluminium yield tri-aluminium compounds R5Al3(OCH2C12H8CH2O)(2) [where R = Me (1) R = Et (2), R = i-Bu (3)]. Compounds 1-3 have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, molecular weight measurements and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of the complexes I and 3 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the central aluminium atom in both compounds is a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal with two oxygen atoms occupying the axial positions. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
