Transition metal complexes of the small cyano anion dicyanonitromethanide [C(CN)_2(NO_2)]- Dedicated to George Christou on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Conventional bench top and solvothermal synthesis are determined to be reliable methods in the synthesis of coordination compounds containing the dicyanonitromethanide (dcnom) anion. From conventional bench top synthesis, [Ni(phen)_3](dcnom)_2 (1a), [Cu(phen)_3](dcnom) _2 (1b), [Cu(en)_3](dcnom)_2 (4), [Cu _3(Hpz)_3(H_2O)(OH)(pz)_3]Cl(dcnom) ·H_2O (7) and [Ag(Hpz)_2(dcnom)] (8) (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, en = 1,_2-ethylenediamine, Hpz = pyrazole and pz = pyrazolate) are obtained. With solvothermal synthesis, [Ni(phen) _2(H_2O)(dcnom)](dcnom) (2), [Cu(phen)_2(dcnom)] (dcnom) (3), [Cu(en)_2(dcnom)_2] (5) and [Cu(pn) _2(dcnom)_2] (6) (where pn = 1,_3-propylenediamine) are formed. Both nitro κ~1(O) and nitrile κ~1(N) coordination modes are observed for the dcnom anion.
