The macrocyclic structures and behavior on the reaction of AgX (X = NO3 and CF3SO3) with bis(nicotinoyl)-4,4'-(9-fluorenylidene)diphenolates (L) have been carried out. Discrete oblong rings and linked rings were constructed via the keen competition between the inter-ring argentophilic (Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag) interaction and the electrostatic interaction between Ag(l) and its anion, and the interconversion of the two species was attempted by means of anion exchange.
