Water and wastewater often contain various forms of total nitrogen (TN), including nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and organic nitrogen. These contents can be harmful to human health if they exist at high levels. For example, in excessive amounts, nitrate contributes to the illness known as methemoglobinemia in infants. As a preventative measure, there is an EPA-imposed maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for nitrate in drinking water.
