Photoionization detectors (PIDs) have been around since the early 1970s. Originally developed to detect and measure toxic chemicals such as Vinyl Chloride, their lack of response to background methane gave them a significant advantage over their predecessor flame ionization detectors (FIDs) in many industrial chemical applications.
