Stormwater runoff has been identified as the primary source of pollution for many of the nation's water resources such as the Chesapeake Bay. Runoff from urban developments, farms and industrial sites has been streaming into the bay for decades. Sediments and nutrients discharged into the water have caused large algae blooms throughout the watershed and prevented sunlight from reaching the bottom of the bay. As a result, the aquatic vegetation has depleted the habitat for many of the bay's animal creatures. Shellfish stocks, including Maryland's prized oysters and crabs, are at dangerously low levels. Even the striped bass, which had been making a comeback, is at risk again.
