We conduct a first substance flow analysis for precious metals, platinum metal group elements and rare earth elements in a Swiss municipal solid waste incinerator. 2. We present a first characterization of the elemental municipal solid waste composition. 3. We demonstrate that the solid waste input contains substantial quantities of precious metals such as Au, Ag and rare earth elements (e.g. Nd, Y). 4. We determine the fate of the metals in the incinerator (transfer coefficients). 5. Many of the valuable metals are enriched in specific outputs and are therefore recoverable.
