I am not very good at predicting the future, but I will give it a shot. One thing I believe I can say with confidence is that geotechnical engineering is not only here to stay but will be even more important in the future. As our cities and traffic continue to grow, more tall buildings will be needed, together with subterranean parking and subway construction. Also, residential construction will be forced into areas of less desirable construction conditions.rnOf particular concern will be the effects on buildings and structures due to ground motions caused by major seismic events. In my opinion, the greatest development in geotechnical engineering in the future will be in the field of earthquake analysis and prediction of foundation behaviour during earthquakes. Geotechnical engineers should have a prominent role in this area.
