A Portuguese protectorate, Macau lies on the Pearl River Delta on the southern coast of China. With an established tradition as a trading center dating back more than 400 years, Macau has been attracting investors from around the world who are looking to tap the immense Chinese market. Across from Macau - in Guangdong, Southern China - annual growth rates of 20% are not uncommon. And as 1999 approaches - when the tiny protectorate reverts to Chinese rule -interest in Macau continues to grow. At the beginning of the decade, with studies indicating that the volume of air traffic in the Asia Pacific region would likely quadruple over the following 20 years, the Portuguese government saw the need for a world class international airport to underpin Macau's position as a gateway to Asia's largest market.
