Rolls-Royce clinches five-ferry propulsion deal

Rolls-Royce is preparing to ship a series of azimuth thrusters, designed with full feathering propellers, and propulsive control systems to Turkish shipyards, in a US$8.2 million contract to supply five double-ended ferry newbuilds. The ferries, all designed by Norway's Multi Maritime for domestic deployment, are currently under construction at the Sefme, Cemre and ADA yards in Turkey. According to Helge Gjerde, Rolls-Royce senior vice president for commercial marine, these particular propulsion packages were selected to enable the forthcoming vessels to reduce fuel consumption on their coastal routes. The ferries are scheduled to commence services in summer 2016.
